Dr. Joanne Collins-Gonsalves Elected Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, United Kingdom

Managing Director of the Historical Research International Inc. Dr. Joanne Collins-Gonsalves was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (RHS) in September 2024 in recognition of her contribution to historical scholarship.


Founded in 1868 in England, the Royal Historical Society is a successful learned society, membership organisation and charity with a 156 year history. The RHS acts as a champion of history, both inside universities and within our culture. In a congratulatory correspondence from the RHS President, Professor Emma Griffin (University London), she welcomed Dr. Collins-Gonsalves and she invited her to participate fully as a Fellow of the RHS.



An Academic Historian, Dr. Collins-Gonsalves holds a PhD in History and is the author of the acclaimed book: Iris de Freitas Brazao, Legal Luminary and Trailblazer: Caribbean, Canada, Wales, England 1896-1989, featured by the University of London as 1 of 3 “fascinating items from the collections” of 312,000 volumes within the holdings of the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (IALS) Library. She is also the author of Portuguese in Business in Guyana 1835-1935: A History of Entrepreneurship, Expansion and Diversification (forthcoming 2024) and From Ashes to Ferro-Concrete: A History of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception (Guyana) 1914-2014 (2014). Additionally, she has authored over thirty (30) research projects, academic articles, book chapters, research papers, conference papers, and biographical profiles in total. Dr. Collins-Gonsalves is currently the Managing Director of the Historical Research International Inc. She serves on the Board of the Edmonton Heritage Council, the Advisory Board of the Journal of the Royal Nova Scotia Historical Society, and the Board of the Rotary Club of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, among other posts.

Dr. Collins-Gonsalves is a graduate of both the University of the Guyana, BA, History and the University of the West Indies where she graduated with the Doctor of Philosophy in History.


She is the recipient of the Council of the University of Guyana Award, the Commonwealth Trust of Guyana Poetry Award, the Rotaract President of the Year for the Caribbean Award, and the Guyana Annual Poetry Award, among other awards. She has also served as a Contributing Author with the Oxford University Press, for the Dictionary of Caribbean and Afro-Latin American Biography edited by Professor Franklin W. Knight and Professor Henry L. Gates.


Dr. Collins-Gonsalves’s work continues to inspire and resonate with readers, making a significant impact on the field of historical research.
