Dr. Joanne Collins-Gonsalves, Managing Director of Historical Research International Inc., presented on Business History at the Canada International Black Women Excellence Networking Online Event, held on April 25, 2023.
Her address focused on Women-Owned Businesses in Canada, in which she referred to the 2023 Women Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub Report, The State of Women’s Entrepreneurship in Canada, which highlighted that statistically, “18% of businesses, including small, medium and large businesses, are majority owned by women in Canada.” As such this is a significant number of companies, and their history must be recorded.
Dr. Collins-Gonsalves noted that Business History should begin when a new company is formed. The company's documents should be easily accessible through an effective record management system for quick retrieval during negotiations and key company changes. She also focused on the value of the Business History, which is especially noted during times of economic challenges, paradigm shifts, and social change. She concluded with an examination of the Public Purpose of Company Records and how these records can be utilized by the company throughout the year in their marketing strategy, among other areas.
At this event, Dr. Collins-Gonsalves also reflected that it was wonderful interacting with the many brilliant and accomplished women in attendance from both Canada and the USA during the online forum.
