On November 30, 2023, Dr. Joanne Collins-Gonsalves presented on Business History in Canada at the Black Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub Symposium, hosted by the Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada. The theme for the Symposium was: Energizing and Advancing Black Entrepreneurship in Canada.
During her presentation via zoom, Dr. Collins-Gonsalves addressed the practical aspects of why company history should be recorded, how this history can be incorporated into the strategic plan of the business, and the need to access company documents effectively. Additionally, company history can be utilized by various departments within the company, for reports, marketing, and presentations, among other areas.
Dr. Collins-Gonsalves noted that business history, specifically of Black-owned companies in Canada, is an under-researched field. Every business decision, merger, and hire constitutes, and is considered part of company history.
With the growth in the number of Black-owned businesses in Canada and the emphasis placed on supporting entrepreneurs to succeed and create generational wealth, the history of these companies should also be of key importance.
